Anyone Can Breastfeed (or “The Amazing Breast Crawl”)

Breastfeeding is one of the most nurturing and healthy things that you can do for your child.  It has been called “the perfect food” and “liquid gold” by those who know about its nutritional benefits and its ability to protect your baby from illness and promote healthy growth.  It is also the most sanitary and easy way to feed your child, costs little to nothing, and is simple (for those of you who are lazy moms like me).  Best of all, nearly anyone can do it, barring physiological problems, such as a prior surgery.

There is an awesome book out there called “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding,” by The Laleche League International, that can give you all of the details of breastfeeding in an easy to understand format. It is a definate must-read for moms considering breastfeeding for the first time.  It gives tips on feeding, positioning, pumping and storing milk, weaning, and basically any other problem you could possibly come across.  It can help you to be more confident in your choice to breastfeed, and will make you look like an old pro when you begin breastfeeding.

However, I believe that breastfeeding is a natural thing for moms and babies, and most can figure it out without little outside help.  To prove my point, I am posting an amazing video, that I came across, of an Indian woman feeding her baby for the first time.  This video was taken as part of an initiative by UNICEF, WHO, and WABA (some world organizations that do stuff) to teach women in developing countries to breastfeed, with little or no education on breastfeeding, in order to lessen the infant mortality rate in these countries.  It basically shows how an infant, born naturally, of course, can kick and move its way to the mother’s breast and can latch on, without assistance.  They call it “The Breast Crawl”.  I had to watch it a few times to understand what they were saying, but this is amazing:

I know, chill bumps right?  It just goes to show that we were created to feed our babies this way.  Let me know what you thought.

  1. This video is great, and it is so true that a healthy newborn will do this! My third child needed no intervention after birth (unlike the first two), and she squirmed around in position and nursed probably 2 minutes after birth. I will never forget it!
