With my second son, I had heartburn almost every night from the fourth month until the eighth month.  I asked my doctor, and she told me to take Tums or Pepcid AC.  I was very uncomfortable with that, because of all of the chemicals in those drugs.  I was not sure if it was good for the baby.  With my daughter, though, I saw a midwife.  I never experienced heartburn once with that pregnancy, but my midwife told me some great natural remedies, just in case.

Here they are:

1. Eat slowly and calmly, chewing well before swallowing.   Do not drink with your meal.
2. Eat small meals and do not overeat.
3. Do not lie down immediately after eating.
4. Almonds- Chew a small handful of raw almonds very thoroughly before swallowing.
5. Papaya tablets-Take some papaya tablets and chew.  These contain digestive enzymes.
6. Slippery elm-Helps neutralize stomach acids, soothes the stomach and absorbs gas.
7. Grits-A cup of grits before bed will help absorb acid.
8. Activated charcoal-Taken by capsule can calm the stomach.
9. Digestive enzymes and probiotics-Take as directed to reduce acid.

The thing that helped me the most, though not on this list, was eating more healthily.  I ate 80-100 grams of protein a day, whole grains, and varied fruits and vegetables.  I cut out all fast food, fried food, and processed food.  This kind of eating helped me to maintain a healthy weight, lessened my nausea significantly, and helped me to NEVER, experience heartburn during my last pregnancy.  Let me know if any of these remedies helps or if you have tried anything else that helps.
